Crossing the channel from the UK
The port you use to enter France obviously depends on
where you live in the UK. The most popular crossing is
the Dover / Calais, followed by the Portsmouth / Cherbourg
or Le Havre crossing. And of course, there is the alternative
channel crossing - the Eurotunnel, which you board at
Folkestone.
Travelling
in France
You can either travel across and down through the centre
of France, or, if the arrival port is Calais, down the
AutoRoute de soleil - motorway to the sun, travelling
via Reims, Dijon and Lyon, taking up the A9 Laguedocianne
at Orange.
Travelling from the UK by car means you really should make
the journey through France part of the holiday and take a
little time to see some of the beautiful countryside.
There are plenty of places to stay, from expensive hotels
to the cheap and cheerful AutoRoute motels like Formula 1,
B&B or Campanile. Click on the logos below to visit their
websites to help plan your route.
If you decide to travel down the centre of France, taking
the new A75, then you get the chance to go over the new viaduct
at Millau. This is a spectacular new bridge, designed by Lord
Norman Foster. At 341 metres (1,118 feet) from the base to
the top of the highest support, it is the highest bridge in
the world. It links the two mountain ranges, spanning river
Tarn in the deep valley near Millau and has made the usual
summer traffic jams a thing of the past
